by ruben17 on May.16, 2009, under Child education, Family education

Holistic learning is a revolutionary concept in all the spheres of life, especially academics. This concept has hanged many lives. Holistic learning is applicable to all types of students’ right from elementary to senior pro. Not many people know about this concept. Most of us still follow the old format of memorizing lessons in order to perform better at exams. We are more of result oriented rather than learning process oriented. The traditional method is known as Rota learning where emphasis is upon memorizing the things. A child is more focused on remembering certain information that might come handy in the exams.

Many parents complain of child not performing good at exams. For such parents, concept of holistic learning has come as a boon. It maximizes the child’s potential apart from improving his thought process in all departments’ of life. Unlike traditional method where complete focus is on memorizing skills, holistic learning offers an entirely different paradigm. Basically, here the focus is on coordinating all parts of the body to perform a particular function. Mind is not the only instrument. The whole body is used for learning purpose. This method also emphasizes the need of using all the senses so that your learning becomes a combination of lessons learned by all the senses. In other words, more use of senses results into better learning.

For example, check new age schools where the moment child enters into nursery he is introduced to games, letters, songs, dance, stories etc. that way, he is able to use all the senses like touch, sound, sight, smell etc. consequently, he learns better. Holistic learning has become the new buzzword in educational circle. More and more parents are being aware of this revolutionary concept. Parents should initiate this method of learning to the child at an early age so that the kid could utilize his maximum potential.

Qualities of a good tutor

by ruben17 on May.12, 2009, under Home tutor

Parents hire tutors with expectations in mind and most tutors may fall short of the parents’ expectations. In many instances, there may be problems over the long run if the parents and tutors fail to communicate well. Obviously, the parents are the customers and the tutors have to try their best to satisfy the requirements of the parents. The question is what are most parents looking out for?

The attitude of the tutor is the most important above all others that I am going to cover. A good tutor should display genuine care and concern for the student under his charge. Many tutors merely regarding tutoring as a part time job but I will like to highlight that the parents have entrusted their children to the tutors because they hope that the tutors can help to improve the grades of their children, hence, I suggest that all tutors should be encouraging to the students under their charge and try your best to help the child academically. Make a difference in the lives of the students and I believe that the students will come to thank you in the years to come.
The second pointer is obviously the appearance of the tutor. For your first lesson at least, you should be dressed correctly so that you portray a professional image. There is no need to over-dress but do remember smart informal will be good. You will always be judged when you first appear at the student’s house and you will have to make sure you pass the first test.
Knowledge is power. This is the deciding factor especially when you are tasked top teach higher levels where you will need to explain difficult concepts to the students. There is no way to hide your inadequacy if you have a poor grasp of the content knowledge. You will have to admit that with the changes in the syllabus, you have to read up. Do not be complacent especially with the use of internet; students may know more than you do.

Delivery of the knowledge is the final test of how good you really are. University professors are famous for being rich in knowledge but poor at delivering that lectures sometimes sound like an ancient Latin class. You can do better than most professors if you take note of certain pointers. Obviously, you have to watch your tone of voice, speed and clarity of language. Always use lay man terms as far as possible when you are explaining concepts which are cluttered with difficult English words. Remember, simplify and do not make the cardinal sin of reading from the textbooks. There are boring tutors who will do that and the tuition sessions will turn up to be frightening reading classes. You can be sure to get the boot soon if you persist in this ancient mode of teaching.

In search of the best tutors, parents will and can pay good fees. In order to command a high fee, you will have to prove that you are really good. You can be sure that tutoring is rewarding when you established yourself as the guru tutor in a specific field.

by ruben17 on May.10, 2009, under Child education

Vedic maths is an original form of Indian arithmetic concept. Multiplications and all other modalities of math can be done in a short time using simple standard tricks. This is a scientific study where the student can enhance the capacity of finishing a module faster. The application cannot be directly loaded in the normal arithmetic prescribed by school but it makes simple calculations faster and is an effective way to score instead of scribbling in the rough page.

Based on sutras and founded by Sri Bharati Trithati in the 1900’s the math form is simple to understand. Like all standard formulas it is just about practicing and unlearning the rigorous way which was originally taught to us. Students love the way the math is taught and is dependable for calculations used by science students in their regular studies. There are several classes that impart teaching vedic maths but it is essential to chose a class where personal attention is possible.

Like for e.g. of a multiplication using vedic math.

Take 45 x 45 = 2025. The answer is about two parts 20 and 25.

In this case we need to understand the ending for such multiplication is always 25.

The first digit 4 is multiplied with 5 ( that is 4+1) to arrive at 20.

Simple method of understanding makes it easy for students who love the excitement the other principles enfold. Classes offer tutorial section and also award grades to deserving students. There are easy to do worksheets and a self learning guide to vedic maths available in various leading bookstores.

Learning a new skill is about an enterprising endeavor. The first logic when enunciated has to grasped well and regular practice definitely improves our memory. There is certainly no age to learn vedic math as learning is a personal interest. Math by itself is mentally stimulating and a great brain exercise.
